Many people feel a bit nervous at the thought of seeing the dentist, particularly a new dentist. Sometimes this fear or phobia is so severe it will stop people coming to see us unless they are in severe pain. It could be you’ve had bad experiences as a child and the smells and sounds in the surgery bring those memories back, or your fear is very specific and you are really scared of injections or the slow drill. Whatever your problem is we can help!
The first thing to do is make an appointment and tell us you are nervous. Our team are sympathetic, friendly and we don’t tell people off! We will listen to you and will do everything we can to help.
We use anaesthetic cream to numb your gum before we give injections, we put you in charge so if you ever want us to stop you just wave at us and we stop. We go at your pace and we do treatment in short bursts. You mustn’t feel worried about telling us to stop if you’ve had enough.
If you haven’t been to the dentist in a long time, you may be really worried about how much treatment you need. Most of the time it is nowhere near as bad as you imagine. The biggest thing is picking up the phone and making the appointment!
The problem is it doesn’t necessarily follow that not having any pain, means you don’t have any dental problems. Tooth decay and gum disease need to be well advanced before they cause pain. By the time they cause pain treatment becomes more difficult more expensive and time consuming and the outcomes are less predictable. At our check-ups we will check your teeth and gums very carefully and advise you of any potential problems. We also check for mouth cancer. If your teeth and gums are completely healthy, we will give you advice on how to keep them that way.
Regular dental visits are important because they can help spot oral health problems early on when treatment is likely to be simpler and more affordable. They also help prevent many oral problems from developing in the first place. Visiting your dentist regularly is also important because some diseases or medical conditions have symptoms that can appear in the mouth.
Cancer can occur in any part of the mouth, on the tongue, lips and in the throat. Sadly, mouth cancer has a very high mortality rate. This is due to late detection.
Some of the early symptoms of mouth cancer include: (This is by no means an exhaustive list, but a list of some of the more common symptoms.)
- An ulcer or a sore throat that has persisted longer than three weeks.
- A white or red patch on the soft tissue, gums, tongue or lining in the mouth.
- A chronic sore throat or hoarse voice that persists for longer than six weeks.
- Difficulty in swallowing or a constant feeling that something is caught in the throat.
- A neck swelling that persists longer than three weeks.
- Numbness of the tongue or other area of the mouth
While bad breath originates in the mouth 80% of the time, at other times it is a symptom of underlying disease which needs the earliest possible treatment.
Persistent bad breath is usually caused by the smelly gases of the bacteria that coats your teeth and gums. Smoking, garlic, and onions can add to the problems. Certain illnesses such as diabetes, liver, or kidney problems, nasal or stomach conditions and “dry mouth” (xerostomia) that affects the flow of saliva can be the cause of bad breath.

Yes, a common misconception is that if a person has dentures, they do not need to see the dentist, however you do not need teeth to develop oral cancer or problems with the upper or lower jaw.
At every visit, we perform an oral cancer exam. A visual inspection of your lips, tongue, throat, and all oral tissue/structures is done, as well as pressing down on the floor of your mouth to check for any unusual lumps, bumps, or sensitivity.
You should have your dentures checked periodically as Bone structure and tissue can change over time, which could affect the fit of your dentures. Poorly fitting dentures can cause other problems such as pressure sores, headaches, misaligned jaws and can also affect one’s ability to chew and speak.Â
One of the benefits of composite bonding is that often there is no need for drilling or anaesthetic. This means that its not only painless but requires no down time, you can go about your day as soon as you leave the clinic.
